Batemans, the largest and oldest brewer in Lincolnshire, marked their 150th anniversary in 2024. As part of the celebrations, they allowed me access to their historical records to help me write a history of the firm. Dusty old ledgers, invoices and letters were unearthed, revealing a range of opinions, arguments, gambles and more. This talk will explain how five generations of the same family combined to maintain the firm’s independence in the face of major challenges which threatened to end the business.
